Rules of Assessment for Undergraduate Students

What are Rules of Assessment?

Rules of Assessment are the rules, principles and frameworks which the University uses to calculate your course progression and final results.  Boards of Examiners use these Rules when making their decisions on whether you can be awarded credit for the modules you have studied, whether you have done enough to move on to the next stage of your course, whether you have done enough to pass your course, and what classification you will receive.  They also set out the frameworks for decisions on what reassessment you could be offered.  The Frequently Asked Questions section gives further guidance on the Rules, and what they mean to you in practice.

How to Find the Rules for your course

Step One - Go to the list of the Rules of Assessment shown below and look at the stage of the course you are in

In the Rules, the equivalent to a year of study is known as a ‘stage’.

Step Two - Follow the link that’s relevant to your course

Some courses have specific requirements, and these are set out in Appendix A to the Rules of Assessment detailing the variations or additions to the standard Rules.  A link is given underneath the main set of Rules, so please remember to check this document as well as the main rules to make sure you have all the information that applies to you.

Step Three - For students studying with partner institutions

Where there is a specific set of Rules to refer to, there will be links underneath the main set of Rules.  If there is no information that relates to your course, you would follow the standard set of Rules for your course and stage of study.
