About the Centre

The Children's Legal Centre is a unique, independent national charity concerned with law and policy affecting children and young people. As well as its publication childRIGHT, it provides the following services:

Advice and information service: A free and confidential legal advice and information service, covering all aspects of the law affecting children and young people. This service is open to children, young people and anyone with concerns about them.

Education Law and Advocacy Unit: Provides legal advice and representation to children and/or parents with concerns relating to schools or Local Education Authorities (LEAs).

Policy and Campaign work: Promotes and campaigns for children's rights in accordance with the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.  The Centre believes that children are young people who have a right to be heard, to have their views considered and their interests independently represented at all levels of decision - making.

The Children and Armed Conflict Unit: A joint project of the Children's Legal Centre and the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex, the Unit monitors the impact of armed conflict on civilian children, and to contribute to the better protection of their rights.

Research and Consultancy: The Centre is currently carrying out a number of research projects, including projects on child labour and complex emergencies. The centre provides independent consultancy and advocacy services.

The Centre also monitors the development of law, policy and practice concerning children and young people, and seeks to influence and inform policy makers and public opinion.
