Registration of third party websites hosted at the University of Essex

Under the terms of its JANET proxy licence, the University is permitted to offer network services to third parties, where such connections are in accordance with the general aims and policies of the University. These network services include the provision of space on the University's World Wide Web servers.

The proxy licence specifies that:

  • There must be a registration mechanism in place that identifies individual proxy connections, and provides for sufficient authentication and authorisation to ensure that use can be audited and controlled, for example the keeping of written records of authorisation to place pages on the organisation's WWW server.

  • Records of registrations must be kept and must be produced on demand for inspection by UKERNA or the JISC.

For these reasons, third party websites hosted on University webservers must be registered with the Web Support Manager, Keith Brooke. Please provide the following information:

  • organisation requesting web space

  • purpose of website

  • contact person

  • URL

...

The final decision on the eligibility of third parties to have websites hosted on University of Essex webservers rests with the Director of Information Systems.

All third parties making use of the proxy licence must adhere to the JANET Acceptable Use Policy and the University regulations and guidelines for computing facilities. Any breach may result in suspension of the service.
