All new students are automatically registered to use University computing facilities. Undergraduate accounts will be closed in the July of their graduation; these accounts may be extended for a short period upon application. Graduate students normally have a period of grace of six weeks after their course has finished before their account is closed. Full details of eligibility for access to central computing services are available on the Computing Service website.
| 1. Introduction |
As a member of the University you have the right to use many of its computing services, but you must behave in a responsible manner. Students suspected of abusing the regulations will have their access to University computing facilities will be suspended pending enquiries which may lead to a disciplinary hearing. Students should carefully read the computing regulations both to ensure that they understand what is allowed and so that they know how to protect their data from possible abuse by others.
The Guidelines for the Use of IT Facilities are on the University website.
Other guidelines and rules covering use of computers are at http://www2.essex.ac.uk/cs/about/regulations/.
These guidelines and rules apply both to University computers and to any computer attached to the University network.
| 2. Main points of the guidelines and regulations |
Computing facilities should only be used for work directly associated with your course of studies. However, modest use for private purposes such as personal e-mail is allowed, within reason.
To keep your work safe you should keep your user account password secret and change it regularly. Under no circumstances should you reveal your password to another user. You should only ever use your own account and password to access computing facilities. You should not use another persons account or password.
Only use a computer if you have explicit authority to do so. Just because you can connect to a computer you shouldn't assume that you are allowed to use it. Don't attempt to read, use or modify any program or data belonging to another user unless you have explicit authority to do so. Dont install your own software on University computers unless you have explicit permission.
You mustnt create, send or receive or display material, including email and Web pages, which others may find offensive or which could be defamatory.
You mustnt violate copyrights on text, images, audio recordings or software. Don't copy software (including games) to or from University computer systems for your own personal use.
You should be considerate to the needs of other users: don't tamper with another user's screen, don't occupy a computer for non-academic work while another person needs it for academic work.
Don't store or use programs which, if executed, could cause or enable any of the above rules to be broken. This includes computer viruses.
Any World Wide Web server set up by staff or students at the University must adhere to the Guidelines for the Operation of World Wide Web Servers: http://www2.essex.ac.uk/cs/about/regulations/www.html.
If you need any help with computing while you are at the University, check the Computing Service website or contact the Help Desk.
