Guidelines for the Operation of World Wide Web Servers

1. Each World Wide Web (WWW) Server which is set up by a member of staff or student of the University using the University of Essex network must be:

(a) authorised by heads of academic departments, heads of administrative sections or heads of service, or, in the cases of the Students' Union Servers, the General Manager of the Students Union;

(b) registered with the Director of Information Systems, who will require to know the name of the person authorising the Server, and the name of a second person responsible for operational matters, (form for registration is here);

(c) de-registered if withdrawn.

2. The person authorising the Server will be responsible for the material deposited on that Server and specifically for ensuring that it is accurate and up-to-date, that authority has been obtained for the incorporation of any copyright material in the Server, the copyright ownership is acknowledged, that the author's moral rights are observed, and that it includes nothing likely to bring the University into disrepute or to cause offence by its wording, images or subject matter.

3. Copyright and any other intellectual property rights to material produced for a server shall vest in the University, without prejudice to pre-existing rights in material which exists in another form.

4. Each individual item of information deposited must state the full name and status of the originator and the date on which the information was installed or last updated.

5. Corporate or promotional material relating to the University, and material relating to Colchester and the surrounding area, must be installed in a manner approved by the Director of External Relations.

6. Servers must be accessible via a tree commencing at the University of Essex Home Page.

7. Information deposited on the WWW may be made globally available or restricted to either departmental or campus-wide availability. Items which are offered for departmental or campus use only should be clearly indicated as such.

8. Any Server or pages which are installed in breach of these Guidelines may be disconnected or removed on the authority of the Director of Information Systems without notice and disciplinary action may be taken against the person(s) responsible. Such action may also be taken against anyone who publishes information which contravenes these Guidelines.
