If you have
problems logging on to web pages....
This page contains some advice for
users about logging on to University web pages that require a
username and password. More material will be added to
this page from time to time.
Your username may need a prefix:
-
Your username should almost
always be prefixed with 'campus\' (without the quotation marks).
So if your logon was 'fred' it would be 'campus\fred' (without the quotation
marks). Do not use fred@essex.ac.uk.
-
Remember to use campus\ and
not campus/ (a backslash not a forward slash). Using a forward slash may
seem to enable you to log on, but can cause problems later on - for example
with web payments or buying printing credit online.
-
But if using WebCT, parts of
the Albert Sloman Library web site, or the University proxy server your
username alone without the campus\ prefix must be used.

IE (Microsoft Internet Explorer)
settings may prevent you from logging on to pages which require a user name
and password, including WebCT. Here is how to fix that without endangering your
security for general browsing.
1. Put Essex in IE trusted
sites:
-
Click Tools, then Internet
Options then the Security tab.
-
Click on the icon "Trusted
Sites"
-
Click the button that says
'Sites....'.
-
In the box that says "Add
web sites to this zone", type *.essex.ac.uk
-
Make sure the box that says
"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" is NOT
ticked.
-
Click Add, then OK, then OK
again and try to log on again.
|
If that did not work and you still
cannot log on....
2. Use a default level of security in trusted sites
-
Click Tools, then Internet
Options then the Security tab.
-
Click on the icon "Trusted
Sites"
-
If the button that says
"Default level" is inactive (greyed out), do nothing. Just click OK.
-
If the button that says
"Default level" can be clicked, click it, then click OK and try to log on
again.
|
If that did not work and you still
cannot log on....
3. Use default levels in the "Advanced" tab.
-
Click Tools, then Internet
Options then the Advanced tab.
-
Click on "Restore defaults".
-
Click OK and try to log on
again.
|
Another useful tactic:
4. Delete Internet Explorer
Temporary Internet files. A full temporary internet files folder can prevent
you accessing secure pages.
-
Click Tools, then Internet Options then the General tab.
-
Click on "Delete files".
-
Click OK, then click OK, and try to log on
again.
