Microsoft Outlook is the recommended email and collaboration tool for use at Essex. Although Outlook can be used with a variety of email accounts, it is recommended that your email is stored on a Microsoft Exchange Server. If it is, Outlook will allow you to use its additional collaboration tools, such as the Calendar, Journal and Tasks list.
Use
this web page to find out if your email is delivered to an Exchange Server. If your mail
server is of the form exchangex.essex.ac.uk (where x is a digit),
your email is stored on a Microsoft Exchange Server.
Using the Out of Office Assistant. This allows you to forward email, and let people know when you are out of the office.
E-mail addresses in Microsoft Outlook (in depth guide)
Clicking on the Office Assistant button (
) in the toolbar of the main Outlook window will display the
Office Assistant. The Office Assistant will display a selection of helpful hints. Click
anywhere on the Office Assistant to get help with the feature you are currently using.
Alternatively, typing a question into the field at the bottom of the speech bubble, and
then clicking on the Search button will display some possible answers to your question.
If you find the Office Assistant annoying, the Contents and Index
option from the Help menu will display a more traditional Windows help
system.
The Computing Service runs regular Outlook training courses for staff and postgraduate students. The courses include tuition on:
reading and sending email,
configuring program options,
filtering messages,
using the address book and distribution lists,
using the Calendar,
arranging meetings.
