The first point of contact for all Colchester campus users is the Help Desk.

*Note that the Help Desk is closed between 09:00 - 10:00 on a Wednesday and is liable to close at short notice when the Computing Service is short staffed or internal meetings are being held. During vacations the Help Desk is closed between 13.00 and 14.00.
The Help Desk provides you with a single point of contact for all services available from the Computing Service. Problems which cannot be dealt with quickly by Help Desk staff will be referred to one of the other specialists within the Service.
Users experiencing problems with the Open Access Computing Areas on the Southend campus should contact the Southend IT Help Desk:

Additionally, during term time, Computing Service IT Student Assistants (ITSAs) are available at certain times to give advice on the use of computing facilities in the open access PC laboratories. These advisory sessions typically take place at the following times:

Whilst
every effort is made to ensure that a session takes place at the announced time, there are
occasions when, for reasons beyond our control, a session has to be cancelled. Whenever
possible, notice of cancellation is posted in the lab where the session is due to take
place.
The Help Desk provides a large number of services:
Assists with a wide range of software programs. [Although students should consult their tutors in the first instance if they have computing problems relating to their course work]. New Student Handbooks, produced by the Computing Service covering commonly used services and software, are also available, while stocks last.
Provides facilities for filing computer equipment fault reports and problems with the Computing Service maintained open access laboratories and staff PCs/printers.
Advises on purchases of computer hardware, including peripherals and printers, and on the purchase of software. Educational discounts are available on many software products. Staff may also be eligible to obtain certain Microsoft software to install on one home computer for work related purposes.
Sells a number of items, including: USB memory devices, blank CDR/RWs, blank DVDR/RWs, various HP laser printer and inkjet cartridges, printer cables, mice and keyboards. A latest price list is available (accessible from the University of Essex only).
Gives advice on the virus protection of computers, and assistance with virus-infected disks.
Assists with the management of user accounts which includes the selling of print vouchers (vouchers may also be purchased from the Students Union campus shop on Square 4, the Library and online).
