Scanners are installed in Computing Service Labs B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K & M and the Ground Floor of the Library. These are Umax AstraSlim scanners that look like this:

This page gives basic information about using these scanners and the accompanying software.
Material to be scanned should be placed under the blue cover of the scanner. Place the material face down with the top left hand corner located in the bottom left hand corner of the scanner. You then need to choose which application to use to scan this material.
There are two applications available, these are:
Microsoft Office Document
Imaging - a Microsoft Office tool that is capable of Optical
Character Recognition (OCR). Use this if you want to scan text.
Photo Express - an Image Processing package. Use this if you want to scan images.
When you have started the application you can begin the scanning process -
For Microsoft Office Document
Imaging - click on the scanner icon on the menu bar and then click on
the Scan button in the new window.
For Photo Express - click on 'Get' and choose Scanner, then click on the Acquire button in the bottom right-hand corner.
Both applications will then present you with a window like this:

On the left are are a set of
choices - select the one that most closely matches the material you are
scanning.
Advanced users may wish to use the option at the bottom to 'adjust the quality
of the scanned picture'. Here you can alter the resolution, contrast and
brightness of the image. You can also alter the area scanned by adjusting the
dotted lines on the right.
The Preview button allows you to see what image the scan will produce, use this
to check the image prior to scanning.
When you are ready click on the Scan button to complete the process.
Once you have completed the scanning process you can then use the packages to modify or edit the scanned image. e.g. In Microsoft Office Document Imaging you can use the OCR process to import the text into Word. N.B. In all cases where you wish to keep a copy of the scanned image you should ensure that you save the image to your M: drive (home directory). By default some of the applications save the images to the C: drive however these will be cleaned out overnight, and so we cannot guarantee they will be available to you at a later date.
