ISS Central Purchasing
Information Systems Services section provides a purchasing service for IT equipment for which all centrally provided IT equipment is purchased. Academic departments are bound to purchase through the service, except where the department has explicit authorisation from the Information Systems Strategy Committee to purchase directly. Most purchases are made through SUPC arranged regional framework agreements which includes national and inter-regional agreements which comply with European Purchasing Directives.
ISS Purchasing (e-mail: cspurch (non-Essex users should add @essex.ac.uk to create full e-mail address)) provides help and advise on the purchase of computer hardware, including peripherals and printers,
and on the purchase of software. Educational discounts are available on many
hardware and software products which are detailed below.
Order requests made to ISS Purchasing should include as much
information as possible as to the items required and their use, as detailed on the
Order Requests Page.
After carefully studying the needs and uses of PCs throughout the University, and with extensive work with the industry suppliers, a standard specification desktop PC has been outlined which is suitable for the majority of users within the University.

Laptop (portable) computers vary in prices and so it can be very confusing in determining which model is best for your needs. One of the main factors in deciding which laptop to purchase, will be the size of the screen and overall size and weight of the laptop required. We would recommend one with an Intel Core i5 processor (or better). Also we would recommend purchasing one that comes with Windows 7 Pro to allow for full domain network services if required.
Toshiba laptops are offered through the HE NDNA with both a 3 year international warranty as well as a 3 year UK collect and return warranty. Their range is varied and so there should be a suitable model for most users requirements. Click on the link below to access the Toshiba NDNA pricelist PDF and the NDNA Toshiba Options PDF:
