A mailing list is a list of mail addresses which is known to the mail system by a
single name. Mailing lists allow you to send the same e-mail to a number of people with a
common interest by using only one email message. For example, modem-users
is a mailing list for everyone at Essex who uses the modem dial-up facility. Mail can be
sent to all members of the list by sending an email to the list names, such as modem-users@essex.ac.uk.
There is a limit, currently 100 kilobytes, on the size of messages which may be send to most lists. Should this prove a problem, it may be possible to reduce the size of your messages by using plain text instead of more space-consuming formats such as Rich Text, and by putting images, documents, etc on a webpage and including the URL in the mail, rather than including them as attachments.
There is a series of webpages about the local mailing lists, (password protected, and only available on campus) which allow you to examine and modify your membership of lists, see what lists are available, and who is on lists of which you are a member. There is also a form to request a new local list.
