Secure IMAP and POP

It is currently possibly to connect to the Essex email servers using either secure or insecure IMAP or POP. From September, the Service will only allow secure connections. It is most likely that you will be affected by this change if you access your email from offsite, or use a non-standard setup onsite. Users of Outlook Web Access, or Outlook in Corporate Mode (the standard Service configuration, as available in the computing laboratories) are not affected by the change. Users of other systems may need to reconfigure their email software. This page shows the necessary modifications for Outlook Express, Outlook in Internet Mode, and Pine. Users of unsupported mailers should use whatever online help is available, or take advice from other users.

Reconfiguring Outlook Express

To leave the messages on the server, you need to open the Internet Accounts dialog box. This may already be open, otherwise you need to open it by going to the Tools menu and choosing Accounts.

If you click on the Mail tab, you should see the e-mail configuration you have entered. Click on the account for mail at the University and then click on the Properties button.

This will show settings for the e-mail account. Click on the Advanced tab to show the Server Port Numbers section which is in the upper portion of the dialog box. Click on the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box underneath Incoming Mail (POP3) or Incoming Mail (IMAP).

You can then choose OK and Close at the Internet Accounts dialog box. Your configuration is now set. If you click on your Inbox you should be presented with a window similar to below, whereby you can click on the Send/Recv button to download your e-mail onto your computer and send any e-mails that are waiting to be sent.

Remember that you only need to be online (connected via the network or phone line) when clicking on the Send/Recv button. You do not need to be online when reading or composing mail.

Reconfiguring Outlook in Internet Mode

Select E-mail Accounts from the Tools Menu, and select View or change existing accounts

Click Next, then select the IMAP or POP3 account

Click Change, to bring up the details of this Account

Click on More Settings, then the Advanced tab

Ensure there is a tick in the box This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for the Incoming IMAP server.

Click OK, then Next to return to the Email Accounts page, then Close

Reconfiguring PINE

Is is not possible to use the PINE SETUP screens to configure it to use secure IMAP. Instead, you need to use vi, or some other editor, directly to change the configuration file .pinerc in your Home Directory (M:\.pinerc from a Windows system), to specify /ssl/novalidate-cert and port 993 in the inbox-path, folder-collection, and anywhere else you specify the server, eg

inbox-path={email.essex.ac.uk:993/ssl/novalidate-cert}INBOX
folder-collections=main {email.essex.ac.uk:993/ssl/novalidate-cert}[]

Help with Unsupported Mailers

It is easy to find help with mailers not supported by the Service, on the Internet. Much of this advice is on pages from other Universities, and the detail is angled towards their setup, but Essex users should find the pages useful. Try these pages for Windows Eudora.
