University Modem/Dial-Up Service

About the Service | Windows Users | Macintosh Users | Getting Help

 About the Service

The University of Essex modem service (sometimes called dial-up service) is rather old now, and is no longer supported.  We recommend that users use an ISP to obtain either (preferably) a broadband connection, or modem service.

The University service is based on an Ascend MAX 6000.  This service offers thirty modem lines on a single telephone number, (01206) 792002.  Modem speeds up to 56,000 bps are supported, with the usual data compression and error correction standards (V42, V42bis, MNP levels 2 to 5, V90).  ISDN connections (via an ISDN V.120 terminal adapter) are also supported.

The dial-up service allows University users to configure their computers to dial-up the University and thus access the internet and use various internet programs (email and web browsers etc).  It will also allow you to upload and download files between your m-drive and home computer, but do not expect to mount shared network drives or run software that is installed on office/lab computers as this is unlikely to work.  Please note that if you currently connect your computer through another ISP then using this service is unlike to provide any additional benefits.

These pages are intended as a guide to using the modem service, and not a definitive instruction manual for setting up your own computer due to the huge number of different configurations of software and hardware.
