JANET is the United Kingdom's academic and research network, which connects several hundred institutions including all UK universities, most colleges of higher education, most research council establishments and other organisations that work in collaboration with the academic community.
JANET is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the Higher Education Funding Councils for England (HEFCE), Scotland (SHEFC), Wales (HEFCW) and the Department of Education for Northern Ireland (DENI), and managed and developed by JANET(UK), under a Service Level Agreement from the JISC.
JANET is fully connected to other Internet service providers in the UK and is also connected to the National Research Networks (NRNs) in Europe. It forms part of the global Internet providing data network access to the rest of the world.
