Changes to Web Browser Settings

The web cache / proxy server is now no longer required. All but a few PCs on campus no longer use it.

Problem that you might see: Since the changeover, I can't browse the Web, although it used to work!

Solution: Follow the instructions below to re-configure your software.

Re-configuring your web browser

To clear the proxy server settings, you will need to re-configure your web browser to not use any proxy server.

With this information cleared, your web browser should start working again. Below are instructions for re-configuring Internet Explorer 5 to 6 and Netscape Communicator 4.5 to 6.2.

Re-configuring Internet Explorer 5 to 6

Start Internet Explorer and ignore any error messages produced. Select the Tools menu and select Internet Options which should bring up the Internet Options dialog box. Select the Connections tab which should show a window similar to the one shown below:

If you have Dial-up settings present, then make sure that Never dial a connection is selected (or Dial whenever a network connection is not present). This will ensure that the modem is not attempted to be used when the computer is connected to a network.

Click on the Lan Settings button to bring up the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box. Make sure that all the boxes are NOT ticked as shown :

Click on the OK button and the following OK button to save the settings. You should now be able to view web pages as before.

Re-configuring Netscape Navigator 4.5 to 6.2

Start Netscape Navigator and ignore any error messages produced. Select the Edit menu and select Preferences. This should bring up the Preferences dialog box. Click on the + (or triangle) next to the Advanced category to expand this option and select Proxies. Select the Direct connection to the Internet similar to the one shown below:

Click on the OK buttons to save the settings. You should now be able to view web pages as before.
