WindowsNT and Windows2000 allow you to share directories on the machine's harddrive with other users on the network. This webpage shows how to do so under WindowsNT, the procedure for Windows2000 is almost identical, although there are differences in the appearance of screens. There are a number of ways you may bring up the screen you want: the simplest is:-
In My Computer right-click the Directory you want to share (note that only directories, not individual files, may be shared)
On the window that appears, click Sharing
Click Shared As, and type in the name by which the share is specified. If you terminate the name with a '$' character, the share does not appear in the listing at Network Neighborhood: users must know of it in order to mount it.
To add a comment about the share, type the text in Comment
To set a User Limit other than the default Maximum Allowed, click Allow and specify a the maximum number of concurrent users.

Very Important: you will almost certainly want to specify which users may access the share, and what access they have (read-only, read-write, etc). The default permission is to allow any user full access, which is usually not what is wanted. To set share permissions, click Permissions

In most cases you will want to Remove the entry for Everyone, then click on Add to select those users or groups of users who will have access. Highlight groups or users in the large pane (only groups will be shown at first: to see individual users, click the Show Users button) and click on Add to select the highlit entry. This may be repeated to add more items. Use the dropdown list to specify what access this group is to be given, then OK to return to the previous screen.

Different sets of users may be given different access rights

This may lead to an ambiguous situation, if a user is given permission both as a member of a group and as an individual, or as a member of two groups. If this happens, the user is given the most restricted of the permissions.
Finally click OK to finish making the share available.
