Usenet News at Essex

* USENET NEWS TIP OF THE DAY
If you have a problem with programming, consider using the comp.* heirarchy of newsgroups.

The University no longer takes a Usenet News feed. However, all machines in the essex.ac.uk domain have been authorised to access the JANET News Reader Service, a centrally-held News store administered by JANET. The machine news.essex.ac.uk has been set up as an alias of the relevant machine, and will continue to be so even should the target machine change. So to access Usenet articles, configure any News reader with this as the NNTP server.

News may be available from your Outlook. In Outlook2000, select the View menu, then Go To, then News. The first time you do this, you will be guided through the News Reader Wizard. You will be asked for your name and email address, the NNTP server to use, and the Newsgroups to which you wish to subscribe. There will be a delay, while the current list of Newsgroups is downloaded.

Type a keyword into the Display Newsgroups which contain box, and the large pane will display all newsgroups with the keyword in the name.

Click on newsgroups to which you wish to subscribe, and click the Subscribe button. When you have subscribed to all Newsgroups your wish, click Finish

Clicking on the name of a Newsgroup will open it, the titles being displayed

Individual articles may be accessed by clicking on them, just as email messages may
