Sophos Anti-Virus Software includes
'On Access Scanning' functionality as part of the software. This runs
continuously in the background vetting all files that the machine accesses.
Its presence is indicated by the small blue shield icon on the task bar (by the clock). If this detects
that a file has a virus it will attempt to disinfect it, if this is unsuccessful then the file will be renamed.
On-screen error messages, see examples below, will alert you that a virus has been found,
and say what actions have been taken - you will not be able to access an infected
file. If you urgently need to access such a
file please contact the
Help Desk.

The Sophos Anti-Virus package itself is accessed from the Start Menu. Click on the Start button & select Programs - Virus Scanning & Removing - Sophos Anti-Virus. This will launch the program with the Sophos Anti-Virus screen, from here you can run manual scans if you need to.
However as you can now run Sophos scans from the right-click menu options when you are in a file management window such as Windows Explorer, we recommend that you use this option if you want to scan something. The section below gives more details on how to do this.
Open Windows Explorer.
Right-click the item you wish
to scan, this can be either a drive (including removable media drives such
as Pen Drives), a folder or a file.
Select 'Scan with Sophos
Anti-Virus' from the list, as the various examples below show, from left to
right: scanning a document, a folder & a drive:

Whilst the scan is
taking place a progress window will show you what is happening. This window
will also let you pause or stop the scan if you need to. An example of a
progress window is shown below.

When the scan is complete you will get a summary window (example below) showing what viruses or errors, if any, were found. For more details on these you can click on the 'More' button.

Click 'Close' to shut the window. Your scan is now complete.
