| My research career began at the
University of Sussex, where I obtained Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. PhD
thesis 'Quantum Electrodynamics Between Conducting Plates' was amongst the first to
explore the currently fashionable theme that quantum effects, previously considered
immutable, are in fact functions of the environment in which systems are located.
Subsequent research career involved investigating confined fields and their influence on
the quantum systems with which they interact. Postdoctoral work at the University
College, London and the ICTP, Trieste, Italy involved working on QED and Field Theory
before moving on to Khartoum University. Joined University of Essex in 1980,
shifted emphasis to condensed matter physics and low-dimensional structures.
Promotion to Senior Lecturer (1992), Reader (1994) and Professor (1996). Research Interests
