When does the University's Visual Identity Policy need to be applied?
Corporate Material
The following are classed as 'Corporate Material' and must conform fully to
the University's visual identity guidelines:
- All material originated by the 'centre', departments, centres, or
institutes, with the primary function of promoting the University to the
outside world.
- All material originated by the 'centre', departments, centres, or
institutes, with the primary function of publicising policy, procedures,
courses or facilities within the University.
The following material may promote an independent identity for the enterprise
concerned, but this should always be endorsed by the University of Essex
logotype.
- Material emanating from services which have a direct trading relationship
with the outside world.
- Material which emanates from quasi-autonomous centres/units/research
groups which have a substantial proportion of external funding and whose
primary function involves a 'trading' relationship with the outside world.

Exclusions
The visual identity guidelines do not apply to:
- material emanating from the Health Centre and the Centre for the Study of
Theology;
- an individual member of staff's teaching materials, reading lists,
handouts etc.;
- ephemeral material relating to one-off events (unless attended by
visitors);
and the University's logo should not appear on such items.
All material should be produced in accordance with the University's visual
identity policy.
