Student Support Workers (SSWs)

Information for students requiring support
If you wish Student Support can be responsible for the recruitment and organisation of your Student Support Workers. There are a number of roles which can provide support for your studies. If you have previously used support workers or think this provision might be useful, please contact us. Job descriptions of these positions are given below for your information. There are costs associated with these services. You may be able to claim disability funds to access these services.

Information for SSWs and potential SSWs
Student Support can be responsible for the recruitment and organisation of Student Support Workers. There are a number of different types of  position, they are all part-time and involve providing support to students with disabilities, mental health difficulties and specific learning difficulties. These positions are open to students as well as external applicants. Job descriptions of these positions are given below for your information.

  • Practical Support Assistant (formerly Campus Assistant)

  • Library Support Assistant (formerly Academic Assistant)

  •  Reader

  • Scribe (see Workshop/Laboratory Scribe Assistant role)

  • Workshop/Laboratory/Scribe Assistant  (formerly Workshop/Laboratory Learning Assistant)

  • Sighted Guide (see Practical Support Assistant)

  • Proof Reader (specialist external provider required)

  •  Study Assistant (as this is tailored to meet the individual needs of a specific student please contact the Disability Service for further information)

  • Examination Support Worker (formerly Exam Scribe)

  •  Manual Notetaker (formerly Notetaker)

  • Communication Support Worker (specialist external provider required)

  • Electronic Notetaker (specialist external provider required)

  • Specialist Transcription Service (specialist external provider required)

  • Mobility Trainer (specialist external provider required)

  •  Specialist Mentor Wellbeing (formerly Mentor Wellbeing)

  • Specialist Mentor Aspergers/SpLD (formerly Mentor - ASD SpLD)

  •  Specialist One to One Study Skills Support (formerly Dyslexia & Study Strategies Tutor)

  • British Sign Language Interpreters (specialist external provider required)

  • Language Support Tutor for deaf students (specialist external provider required)
